Like-for-Like Swap — What's Actually In Scope
A true like-for-like is the only job that should come in under an hour: customer has an existing washing machine, the new one is the same dimensions, the cold feed and waste are accessible, the isolation valve opens and closes, the standpipe is correctly sized, and the new flexi-hoses reach.
Items that should be on every swap quote:
- New WRAS-approved flexi-hose (single cold, or hot and cold if it's a Bosch/Miele dual-fed machine — most are cold-only)
- Test cycle: fill, agitate, drain, spin — at least one full short cycle
- Level check using a spirit level on the top plate, with all four feet locked
- Leak check on hose-tap connection AND hose-machine connection
- Tilt test: front feet locked, lean and release — should not rock
The hidden cost on swaps is the isolation valve. Quarter-turn ball valves seize after 5–10 years of disuse. The Anti-Back-Siphon Requirement

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect a washing machine to the hot supply?
Most modern UK domestic machines are cold-fill only (one hose). Some Bosch, Miele and AEG models are hot-and-cold fill, taking advantage of cheaper cylinder heating. If the machine accepts a hot supply, fit a separate appliance valve to the hot side; hose colour-coding is conventionally red for hot, blue for cold. Never plumb a cold-only machine into hot — the inlet solenoid is rated for cold water only and will fail in months.
Is a self-cutting saddle valve acceptable?
No. Self-cutting saddle valves (the "tap-on" type that pierces a pipe) are not WRAS-approved for permanent installation and breach the Water Regulations.
