Electric Ovens — Which Circuit?
The circuit decision depends on rated power:
- ≤3kW (13A) — a fused spur from the kitchen ring final via a 13A switched fused connection unit (FCU) is acceptable. Many modern single ovens (2.5–3.0 kW) fit this category. The advantage: no new circuit, no notification. Use this where the kitchen ring exists and capacity allows.
- 3–7.4 kW (single oven, large or pyrolytic; or double oven) — a dedicated 32A radial circuit in 6mm² T+E from the consumer unit (CU) to a 45A cooker switch, with a connection unit behind the oven. Notifiable under Part P.
- 7.4–10 kW (range cookers) — typically 32A B-type MCB on 6mm² T+E; check manufacturer's specified circuit current and apply BS 7671 diversity factor for cookers (first 10A at 100%, remainder at 30%, plus 5A if a socket is included in the cooker switch).
For diversity calculation on a 10kW range (43.5A connected load): 10A + (33.5 × 0.3) = 20.05A demand. A 32A circuit is adequate. Do not size the circuit on connected load alone — apply Regulation 311.1 / Appendix 4 of BS 7671 diversity factor.
The Cooker Switch — Where and Why
BS 7671 requires a means of isolation for fixed-wired cooking appliances. The 45A double-pole (DP) cooker switch with neon indicator is the standard solution:
- Located within 2m of the cooker, but not directly above it
- Within reach of the user without bending or stretching across the hob
- A second connection unit (CCU) is typically fitted below the worktop behind the oven so the oven can be pulled out for servicing without dismantling the switch
The 45A cooker switch with integral 13A socket is popular but is gradually being deprecated where worktop sockets are available elsewhere — the worktop socket cluttered with toaster/kettle leads is a fire risk and not preferred.
Gas Ovens — Bayonet and Test
Gas oven connection uses an LCC1 bayonet fitting (the "micropoint") with a self-sealing valve. The flexible hose is also LCC1-compliant, with a 5-year lifespan stamped on it; check the date code and replace if expired even on a like-for-like swap.
The Gas Safe install sequence:
- Visual check of existing gas point and pipework
- Disconnect old oven; cap and pressure-test if any pipework alteration
- Inspect new oven for damage in transit
- Connect new bayonet hose, slide oven into position
- Check hose has no kinks, no fouling on hot surfaces, no stretching
- Soundness (tightness) test on the installation per IGEM/UP/1B for domestic

Pricing the Notification

Common Site Overruns
- No existing 32A cooker circuit — customer assumed there was one; circuit must be run from CU.
- CU full — no spare way in consumer unit; either a CU change (£500–£900) or a sub-board (£250–£400).
- CU is old (pre-RCD) — current Part P/BS 7671 requires RCD protection on circuits under floors / in walls. Adding a single RCBO may need a CU change.
- Bayonet hose past date code — must be replaced (£24–£42).
- Gas hob present without correct spillage — flue-spillage test required when ducted cooker hood + gas hob + open-flued appliance share a room. Adds 30+ minutes.

Can I install an electric oven myself?
You can mechanically install (slide into cabinet, connect to an existing 13A plug if the oven is ≤3kW with a fitted plug, level and trim). Is a 13A fused spur acceptable for a 3.6 kW oven?
No — a 3.6 kW oven draws 15.7 A at full load, exceeding the 13 A fuse rating. The manufacturer's stated load determines the circuit. Round up to a 32A radial circuit on 6mm² cable, terminated at a 45A cooker switch.
Who can install a gas oven?
A Gas Safe registered engineer with category "Cookers" on their card (most domestic gas engineers carry this). The customer should check the card and the Gas Safe Register (gassaferegister.co.uk) before allowing work. A non-registered installer working on gas is an offence under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, Regulation 3.
Does a hard-wired oven need an isolator?
