The circuit decision depends on rated power:

For diversity calculation on a 10kW range (43.5A connected load): 10A + (33.5 × 0.3) = 20.05A demand. A 32A circuit is adequate. Do not size the circuit on connected load alone — apply Regulation 311.1 / Appendix 4 of BS 7671 diversity factor.

The Cooker Switch — Where and Why

Can I install an electric oven myself?

You can mechanically install (slide into cabinet, connect to an existing 13A plug if the oven is ≤3kW with a fitted plug, level and trim). You cannot run a new 32A cooker circuit yourself without notifying Building Control unless you are Part P registered. Most replacement electric ovens are NOT supplied with a 13A plug — they have a free end requiring connection to a cooker connection unit, which is a fixed-wired installation.

Is a 13A fused spur acceptable for a 3.6 kW oven?

No — a 3.6 kW oven draws 15.7 A at full load, exceeding the 13 A fuse rating. The manufacturer's stated load determines the circuit. Round up to a 32A radial circuit on 6mm² cable, terminated at a 45A cooker switch.

Who can install a gas oven?

A Gas Safe registered engineer with category "Cookers" on their card (most domestic gas engineers carry this). The customer should check the card and the Gas Safe Register (gassaferegister.co.uk) before allowing work. A non-registered installer working on gas is an offence under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, Regulation 3.

Does a hard-wired oven need an isolator?
