Application method

Removing pebble dash is the job most renderers underestimate. There is no power tool that takes off pebble dash without damaging the substrate underneath:

The only reliable methods are hand chipping with a bolster and lump hammer (slow, around 4-8 m²/day per labourer), or over-cladding (EWI, weatherboarding, or new render directly over the existing dash if substrate adhesion tests pass). Hand removal is typically £40-£90/m². Over-cladding ranges from £80-£250/m² depending on system.

For heritage properties where the dash must come off without damaging soft lime mortar beneath, expect £80-£150/m² and specialist contractors only.

Repair vs full replacement

Pebble dash typically fails in patches — blown areas where the butter coat has lost bond, often around windows, parapets and at ground level. Repairing patches is technically straightforward but visually difficult because new dash never matches old (aggregate colour shifts over decades with weathering and biological growth).
