Fluid Category and backflow considerations

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require backflow protection appropriate to the fluid category. Domestic incoming supply is Category 2 (aesthetic contamination risk from the internal system). A double check valve (DCV) is not mandatory on the incoming supply itself but is required at any Category 3 or 5 downstream fitting.

If you're replacing the incoming and encountering downstream category-3 risks (garden tap, boiler filling loop, dishwasher, washing machine), advise the customer and quote separately for compliant additions. Do not leave existing non-compliant setups in place after replacement — the new work needs to comply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to notify Building Control?

For the internal replacement pipe, no. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 apply, and any WaterSafe-approved installer is competent to self-certify. External connection at the main is done by the water company under their own competency scheme.

If you're replacing the internal supply as part of a wider bathroom/kitchen refit, other elements (e.g. gas alterations, unvented cylinder installation) may be notifiable — but not the lead pipe replacement itself.

Can I splice into existing lead partway along?

No. If you're replacing lead, replace it end to end (from the boundary stopcock or as far back as you can reach). Splicing MDPE into lead leaves the customer with an ongoing lead exposure risk and a non-compliant joint (lead-to-plastic joints are not WRAS approved). The whole point of the job is to remove lead from contact with drinking water.

What about the meter?

Is 25mm always the right size?

For a single dwelling on a mains supply within 30–50m of the main, 25mm MDPE is standard and provides ample flow for typical demand. For longer runs (>50m), rural connections, larger properties with 2–3 bathrooms, or where a mains-pressure combi + high-demand shower is being installed, step up to 32mm. Can I re-use the old lead pipe as a rope-pull for the new MDPE?
