Board Type Selection
Standard wallboard (12.5mm): most common. Fire reaction Euroclass A2-s1,d0. For general walls and ceilings in domestic use.
Heavy-duty / contract board (15mm): better acoustic and impact resistance. Required in some hotel, school and commercial corridor specifications. Adds 20–40% to material cost.
Moisture-resistant (MR / "green"): paper face is moisture-resistant. For bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms. NOT waterproof — still needs tanking behind tiled wet-area showers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I dot-and-dab onto bare brick or plaster first?
Either works. The product standard (BS 8212 and manufacturer instructions) permits direct dot-and-dab to brick, block, concrete. The brick must be sound, dust-free, and not subject to rising damp. Skim of bonding-coat plaster before boards adds cost but ISN'T needed for compliance.
Can I dot-and-dab over old plasterboard?
Not recommended. The old board may have failed adhesive, damp, or paint that prevents new bond. Remove old board first.
How do I fix into a dot-and-dab wall after the work is done?
Use plasterboard cavity fixings (e.g. Spring Toggles, Plasplugs, Fischer DUOPower). Heavy items (TVs >25kg, shelving) should fix through to the brick beyond the dab — use chemical anchors or expansion bolts of suitable length.
Is there a difference between British Gypsum, Knauf, and Siniat boards?
The products are equivalent for most domestic specifications. System warranties differ — if you use British Gypsum board with Knauf adhesive and Knauf metal track, neither manufacturer's system warranty applies. For commercial / spec-driven work, stick to one manufacturer's system.
