  1. From the macerator, pipework rises vertically to its highest point — typically 1-3m below the manufacturer's max head.
  2. At the top of the rise, install an anti-siphon valve.
  3. From the high point, pipework falls at 1:200 minimum (steep enough for gravity, gentle enough to maintain pressure) to the discharge point.
  4. Discharge point is into a gravity stack via a 110mm reducer, or into a chamber. Never into a hopper.

Where Building Control will refuse

A Building Notice or Full Plans submission for a new macerator WC will typically be refused if:

  1. The dwelling has no other gravity-discharge WC.
  2. The proposed discharge is to a hopper head (untrapped open funnel).
  3. The discharge exceeds the manufacturer's stated head.
  4. The discharge pipework is shared with another (un-pumped) drain run at low level (the pumped discharge can back-pressure the gravity drain).
  5. The macerator is proposed in an HMO bedroom without a separate WC available to the household.

Is a macerator WC legal as the only toilet in a flat?

In practice, no. Approved Document Part H requires drainage that is robust against failure. A macerator WC requires electrical power and a working pump to function — power failure or pump failure leaves the dwelling without a working toilet. Building Control consistently refuses single-WC macerator installations in dwellings, although there is no absolute statutory ban. For habitable use, every dwelling needs at least one gravity-discharge WC.

Can a macerator handle wet wipes?

No, despite "flushable wipe" marketing. Wet wipes do not disintegrate in the brief residence time inside a domestic macerator. They wrap around the impeller, jam the motor, and cause the most common Saniflo callout. Customer education is essential — provide a sticker for the toilet lid or include in your handover paperwork. How long does a macerator last?
