Summary

Mesh scrim application sequence
- Tap the board edges to make sure they're snug, no gaps wider than 3mm (fill larger gaps first with bonding plaster or jointing compound).
- Cut mesh scrim to length. Peel backing and apply centred over the joint, pressing into place.
- Smooth with a 100mm joint knife to remove air bubbles.
- Apply skim plaster directly over — no PVA bed needed for mesh scrim.
Paper tape application sequence (drylining finish)
- Apply a 50mm wide bed of jointing compound along the joint with a 150mm filling knife.
- Press paper tape into the wet compound, working from one end to the other.
- Squeeze excess compound from under the tape with the knife.
- Apply a second coat of compound over the tape with a 200mm finishing knife, feathering 100mm each side of the joint.
- When dry (24 hours), apply a third coat with a 250mm knife, feathering 150mm each side.
- Sand lightly between coats and after final coat.
This is slow but gives the smoothest joint and is the standard for taped-and-jointed drylining work (no skim).
Internal corner taping
Two main approaches:
Paper tape method (preferred for skim):
- Run a 50mm wide bed of bonding plaster or compound into the corner.
- Fold a 100mm length of paper tape centrally (pre-creased tapes available).
- Press into the bed with a corner trowel.
- Apply skim plaster across both faces.
Mesh tape method (faster):
- Apply self-adhesive mesh to one face, extending into the corner.
- Apply self-adhesive mesh to the other face, overlapping.
- Apply skim plaster.
The paper-tape method gives a crisper corner; mesh is faster on a working day.
Common mistakes that cause cracking
- Scrim missed at a joint — joint will crack within 12 months. Always sight-check after boarding that every joint has tape.
- Air pockets under mesh scrim — knife the scrim down before skimming. If you can feel a gap, the plaster will telegraph the joint.
- Skim applied before scrim has bonded — for mesh, only a problem if the backing is damp; for paper tape, must wait for the bed compound to set.
- Wrong scrim on butt joints — butt joints (where the cut edge of one board meets the cut edge of another) move more than tapered joints. Use heavy-duty fibreglass (100mm) or paper tape, never standard 50mm mesh alone.
- Skim over PIR-backed board without primer — the PB face on PIR boards is often more absorbent than standard PB. Always primer (Thistle Bond-It or dilute PVA).
Repair scrimming
For repair patches:
- Cut the damaged area square back to sound board.
- Cut a new piece of plasterboard to fit, fix with PB screws into existing framing.
- Scrim ALL FOUR edges of the patch.
- Skim across the patch and 150mm beyond on all sides.
- Sand flush, repaint.
A patch without scrimming the perimeter will crack within months — the patch acts as a giant butt joint.
Drying and dust
Once skim is on:
- Do not heat the room artificially (no fan heaters, no central heating on full). Forced drying causes shrinkage cracks.
- Open windows for ventilation only when ambient temperature is above 5°C.
- Resist sanding for at least 7 days — full carbonation of the plaster face takes that long.
- Mist coat with diluted matt emulsion (1:1 with water) as the first paint coat — the plaster needs to "drink" the first coat in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Mesh or paper tape — which is better?
Both work. Mesh is faster (self-adhesive, no bed coat) and is the standard for domestic skim work. Paper is stronger and gives a flatter joint for taped-and-jointed drylining (no skim) work — used in commercial drylining and high-spec residential. For a typical plasterer doing 30+ skim jobs a year, mesh saves enough time to be worth the slight crispness trade-off. For a drylining contractor doing pre-decoration finishes (no skim), paper tape is the only correct choice.
Do I need to PVA over scrim before skimming?
For self-adhesive mesh scrim, no — apply skim directly over the scrim. For paper tape applied in a jointing compound bed, the bed coat is the primer. For the wider plasterboard surface (between the joints), PVA primer is required if the boards are absorbent (or use a proprietary primer like Thistle Bond-It). Test a small area: spray water on the board face; if it absorbs in under 5 seconds, the face needs primer.
How wide should the gap between boards be?
Tapered-edge plasterboard joints should be touching with no gap (the tape and skim fill the recessed edge). Square-edge or butt joints should be 2-3mm wide — too tight and movement opens them, too wide and the joint compound shrinks back. Gaps over 5mm should be filled with bonding plaster before scrimming.
Why is my fresh skim cracking?
Three usual causes: (1) joints not scrimmed properly — cracks follow the joint pattern, (2) skim applied too thick — over 2-3mm shrinks and crazes, (3) forced drying — fan heaters or radiators on full pulls moisture out too fast. If cracks appear within 24 hours of finish, it's drying. If they appear after weeks/months along joint lines, it's missed scrim.
Can I skim straight onto plasterboard without scrim?
No. Every joint will crack within 12 months. Skim straight onto plasterboard between joints is fine (with appropriate primer), but joints, corners and transitions need scrim. Skipping scrim is a false economy — the callback costs 5× the original scrim time.
