The correct calculation method — by drop, not by area
Step 1 — measure the room perimeter (all walls to be papered) and the ceiling height (floor to ceiling, or to coving/picture rail if the paper stops there).
Step 2 — work out how many drops fit around the room:
Drops needed = Room perimeter (m) ÷ Roll width (0.53m), rounded up
Step 3 — work out how many usable drops one roll yields, accounting for pattern repeat:
Drop length required = Ceiling height + trim allowance (0.1m) + pattern repeat allowance
Usable drops per roll = Roll length (10.05m) ÷ Drop length required, rounded DOWN
Step 4 — work out total rolls needed:
Total rolls = Drops needed (Step 2) ÷ Usable drops per roll (Step 3), rounded UP
Always round up at every stage — a partial drop still requires a full roll to be opened, and a partial roll's usable drops are always rounded down because an incomplete drop cannot be hung.
Worked example 1 — straight-match paper, standard bedroom
Bedroom 4m × 4m, ceiling height 2.4m, straight-match paper (no pattern offset), one standard door and one standard window (not deducted — see below).
- Perimeter = (4 + 4 + 4 + 4) = 16m

- Raking stairwell wall (variable, up to 4.8m at the tallest point): each drop here may need its own full roll, since a 4.8m drop leaves only 5.25m of usable roll length remaining — rarely enough for a second full-height drop
- Always measure the tallest point of each wall section and price the drop for that full height, even where the average height is lower

When to deduct for openings
Only deduct a roll for an opening if it removes an entire drop's worth of wall — a door or window rarely does this because the paper still needs to wrap the reveal and the area above/below the opening still needs its own drop(s). As a working rule:
- Standard doors and windows — do not deduct; the offcuts above/below the opening are usually needed to complete the drop
- Large openings (patio doors, bay window units, sliding doors spanning most of a wall) — deduct one full drop width per opening, since no paper is hung there at all
- Multiple small windows on one wall — treat as standard, no deduction, unless they collectively remove more than half the wall's drops

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I calculate non-woven (paste-the-wall) paper differently from standard paper?
No — the roll size, drop calculation and pattern-repeat method are identical regardless of paste method. The only difference between non-woven and traditional papers is how the paste is applied (to the wall vs to the paper) and the soaking/booking step, not the quantity calculation.
How much extra should I order for a random-match (no visible repeat) paper?
10% is a reasonable wastage allowance for random-match or textured papers with no pattern to align — the same as a straight-match paper. You still lose length to trim and to the fact that drops are calculated individually rather than as continuous area, but there's no repeat-matching loss.
What if the supplier's own online calculator gives a different number to mine?
Use the higher of the two figures and check what the supplier's calculator assumes for wastage percentage and whether it deducts for openings — most manufacturer calculators are deliberately generous (they'd rather sell you one extra roll than have you return mid-job with a shortfall complaint) and their working assumptions aren't always shown.
