When to repoint
Common triggers:
- Visible erosion of joints (mortar recessed > 5mm below brick face)
- Crumbling mortar when scraped with a screwdriver

A whole-elevation repoint is needed every 50–100 years. Spot repointing (patches of failed joint) every 10–20 years on weathered elevations.
Repointing procedure
Set up scaffold or access platform. Pointing from a ladder gives poor finish and is harder on the back; scaffold pays for itself in time and quality.
Rake out failed joints to 15–25mm depth. Use a 4mm tungsten-tipped raker disc on an angle grinder for speed, OR a hand-held jointing chisel for sensitive heritage work. Never use a wider raker disc — you'll damage the bricks above and below the joint.
Brush out dust and rinse joints with water. Mortar needs to bond to a clean, damp substrate. Dry joints will suck water from the new mortar before it cures, causing crumble.
Mix mortar to spec. Standard mix 1:1:6 (cement:lime:sand) for general; 1:2:9 for softer brick; pure lime for heritage. Sand should be sharp washed building sand (not soft, not coloured). Mix to a stiff "snowball" consistency — should hold its shape when squeezed.
Press mortar firmly into joints with a small pointing trowel. Fill in two passes: first half-fill and let it firm slightly, then top up. Avoid air pockets.
Strike joints to finish while mortar is still "thumbprint hard" (firm but still impressionable). Don't strike too early (smears) or too late (cracks the surface).
Brush off any residue. Use a soft brush perpendicular to the wall. Don't use water at this stage — washes pigment off and weakens the surface.
Cure for 7+ days. Cover with hessian and re-damp daily in hot weather. Heritage lime mortars need much longer curing — 4–6 weeks before stress.
Mortar specification — the bit most people get wrong
The single most common repointing fault is mortar that's too strong for the brick. A strong (high-cement) mortar on soft Victorian brick will crack the brick face during winter freeze cycles — the brick can't move slightly to accommodate thermal/moisture expansion, so it spalls instead.
The rule: mortar must be SOFTER than the brick. Modern hard machine-pressed brick can take a 1:1:6 cement-lime-sand mix. Victorian/Edwardian soft handmade brick needs a pure lime mortar (NHL 2 or NHL 3.5 depending on exposure). Get this wrong and your repoint will damage the wall, not protect it.

Tuckpointing — the procedure

- Trim the ribbon precisely flat to the wall face with a slender knife.
- Cure for 4–6 weeks before any rain exposure where possible.
The result: a wall that appears to have impossibly fine, perfectly regular joints — the original Victorian decorative effect that imitated the gauged brickwork of more expensive buildings.
Heritage and Listed Building Consent
Repointing a Grade I, II*, or II listed building almost always requires Listed Building Consent. The conservation officer will want:
- Mortar analysis of the existing (sampled and lab-tested for binder type, sand grade, pigment)
- Proposed mortar specification to match
- Joint finish to match the original (often flush or recessed, never bucket-handled)
- Trial panels for approval before full work
