What Counts as a "Circulation Space"?
A circulation space is a hallway, landing, or corridor that forms part of an escape route from a habitable room to the final exit. In a typical two-storey house:
- Ground floor: front hallway, kitchen, lounge, dining room
- Hallway is a circulation space
- First floor: landing
- Landing is a circulation space
- Bedrooms open onto the landing
Smoke alarm coverage on the escape route: one alarm in the ground-floor hallway (or two if the hallway is long) and one on the first-floor landing. Both interlinked.
The Heat Alarm in the Kitchen
A heat alarm (not a smoke alarm) is fitted in the kitchen because:
- Cooking generates aerosols that trigger smoke alarms (false alarms reduce real-alarm response)
- A heat alarm responds to actual fire temperature (58°C fixed + rate-of-rise)
- Heat alarms do not detect smouldering fires — but smouldering fires in the kitchen are rare
- The heat alarm must be interlinked with smoke alarms elsewhere so a real kitchen fire triggers full property warning
The heat alarm is ceiling-mounted, centre of kitchen or above the highest fire-risk source (cooker / oven).
The Principal Habitable Room
BS 5839-6 requires an additional smoke alarm in the principal habitable room. This is:
- The room where the household spends most waking time (typically the lounge)
- A room containing soft furnishings (sofas, curtains) that can support a major fire
- Often the room with the most electrical loading (TV, hi-fi, multiple sockets)
In a single-room flat / studio, the entire flat IS the principal habitable room.
Grade and Category — Choose Both
The two systems work together. A typical specification reads "Grade D1 Category LD2":
- Grade D1 — mains-powered alarm with sealed lithium battery backup
- Category LD2 — covers escape routes plus principal habitable room and high-risk rooms
For most modern UK rented and new-build domestic work, Grade D1 Category LD2 is the standard. For HMOs and houses with multiple occupancy bedsits, Grade D1 Category LD1 is required by fire risk assessment.
Positioning Detail — The Tape Measure Test
Common position errors:
- Within 300mm of wall — eliminates the still-air pocket where alarms work best
- In a corner (within 150mm of corner) — stagnant air, slow smoke detection
- Within 600mm of forced-air supply — air movement disperses smoke before alarm can detect

- 1.5–3.0m above floor (CO is similar density to air, distributes through room)
