Choosing and sizing hinges

Hinges are selected by gate weight and the loading pattern, not by which hinge happens to be in stock. Under-sized hinges are the single most common cause of early sag — the hinge itself bends or the screws pull out of the timber under a cantilevered load the hinge wasn't rated for.

Hanging sequence
