Diagnostic procedure — start here
Lift the cistern lid and look at the water level. If water is at or above the overflow weir, it's the fill valve. If water is at the normal level (10–15mm below overflow) but you can hear flow, it's the flush valve leaking into the pan.
Listen for the leak path. Trickle sound from the pan = flush valve. Hiss / running sound from the cistern with normal water level = fill valve continuing to fill against the overflow. Silent leak with wet floor = cistern-to-pan or pan-bolt washer.

- Isolate water and flush to empty.
- Disconnect supply pipe.

Why does my customer's cistern phantom-flush?
A slow leak through the flush valve drains the cistern over hours. When the water level drops below the fill valve's reset point, the fill valve kicks in and refills — sounds like a "phantom flush" but is actually the fill valve responding to a real (slow) leak. Replace the flush valve.
Can I just put a brick in the cistern to save water?
No. A brick in a modern dual-flush cistern interferes with the siphon/drop valve mechanism and can cause incomplete flush. Modern UK cisterns are already at Part G's 6-litre dual-flush limit — they can't be made meaningfully more water-efficient with a brick. If water-saving is the goal, ensure dual-flush function is working and that the customer is using the half-flush.
My replacement Fluidmaster keeps weeping — what's wrong?
Almost always the diaphragm hasn't seated correctly. Take the top off, check the diaphragm is centred and flat in the seat. Excess limescale on the seat will prevent seal — clean before refitting. Should I use silicone on cistern-to-pan joints?
