The 3-minute diagnostic sequence
Before any tool comes out, do this in order:

Fixing a trap or pan-outlet blockage
If the water rises and stays high, the block is in the trap. Steps:
- Turn off supply (or hold the float in the cistern) — do not flush again until cleared. Extra water = overflow risk.
- Bail down to 100–200mm of water in the pan. Enough to seal the plunger, not so much you spill.
- Plunger — insert into the outlet, form a seal, plunge with firm downward strokes. 15–20 strokes. Reversal creates suction that pulls the blockage.
- If plunger fails, closet auger — crank the cable through the trap, feeling for the obstruction. When you meet resistance, keep cranking with pressure. Retract the auger; the blockage often comes back with it.
- Test flush — turn supply back on, cautiously test. If it drains normally, job done. If it rises again, treat as downstream.

Rodding a downstream blockage
Blockage is downstream if the IC nearest the house is full while the property drains slowly. Steps:
- Locate the run — trace the direction from the full IC toward the sewer. The next IC downstream should be clear.
- Rod from the CLEAR chamber back UPSTREAM into the full one — always rod against the flow. Rodding downstream sends the blockage further into the system.
- Attach the corkscrew head to your rods. Screw the rods together clockwise. Feed carefully to avoid dislodging joints.
- Push forward with rotation — clockwise only. Never reverse-rotate: the rod sections unscrew and you leave rods in the drain.
- Feel for the obstruction — a wet paper mass gives spongy resistance; a root gives firm resistance; a broken pipe gives no resistance at all (rod goes into voids).
- When you hit the blockage, work back and forth to break it up. Water will start moving in the upstream IC.
- Flush through — run all upstairs taps + flush toilet for 5 minutes to clear residual debris.
When rodding meets a hard-stop
If you hit an immovable obstruction:
- Roots — no rod will clear substantial root ingress. Sub-out to a jetter with root-cutting head. Long-term fix is a lining or excavation and repair.
- Collapsed pipe — you'll feel rods going into open voids or into loose soil. Do not try to push through. Book a CCTV survey.
- Silt / grease build-up in a large section — jetter needed. Rodding just makes a hole in the middle; jetter clears the full bore.
Vent stack blockages
If the toilet flushes fine but you get gurgling at sinks/showers, or the toilet is slow-flushing without water rising to the rim, the soil vent pipe (SVP) may be blocked at the roof. Common causes:

- Broken pipe — collapsed clay section, cracked plastic, dropped joint. Debris catches on the defect.
- Wrong-way connection — occasional new-build issue where a soil branch connects backwards. Very rare but happens.
Do not keep quoting rodding calls on the same drain. Push for a survey and a permanent fix.

- Sewage is Category 5 contaminated water. Nitrile gloves minimum; face shield if splashback risk.
